A Quick Update on My Comedy Journey

Brandon @ Rise On Stage
Just a few weeks into my comedy journey, I’ve already hit the stage at several shows. Despite the nerves, the last showcase I attended was a hit, with the audience and my peers finding my act hilarious. However, I did encounter a few hiccups, like stumbling over lines and wrapping up earlier than planned. I’m considering sharing these moments either through a transcript or a video to help others learn from my mistakes. Every Wednesday, my friends from the comedy community and I hit the open mic night at Rise Comedy Club. We aim to support and critique each other, a practice that has proven essential for our improvement. Last week, a delay due to a friend’s work commitment taught us the importance of signing up early to secure better performance slots, especially when planning to visit multiple clubs in one evening. Many of my classmates are keen to keep the momentum going, and I think introducing an additional comedy night could be beneficial. This would expose us to new audiences, preventing us from getting too comfortable and allowing us to test new material more frequently. One area I’m focusing on is improving my stage presence, including avoiding fidgeting with the microphone cord, maintaining better eye contact, and letting my jokes breathe. These changes are crucial for enhancing my connection with the audience and making each performance smoother than the last. This journey is teaching me more than just how to make people laugh—it’s about growing as a performer and learning the ropes of this exhilarating art form.
