Running Towards a New Horizon: My Journey from Military to Marathon
Every morning, like clockwork, I’m up at 5:00 AM. The day kicks off with the comforting ritual of brewing a hot cup of coffee and whipping up breakfast, fueling up for a run. By 7:20, the kids are off to school, and I’m slipping into my running gear, ready to hit the pavement by 10. There’s something magical about the morning air—cool and crisp, with the sun just beginning to stake its claim in the sky. I take a deep breath, secure the baby in the stroller with a stash of snacks, and we’re off.
Running has woven itself into the fabric of my life over the past three years. It’s my morning meditation, my fitness fix, and my daily dose of freedom. There’s a thrill in feeling the wind against my skin (what little hair I have doesn’t offer much resistance) and the sun painting my face with warmth. And that rush of accomplishment as I wrap up a run? Unbeatable.
Now, at 43, I might not break any speed records, but it’s not about that. It’s about showing up—rain or shine. It’s about the commitment, the routine. And let me tell you, there’s a certain pride in that consistency.
I run for countless reasons—to stay healthy, to clear my mind, to find my center, and to push my limits. But above all, I run for the love of it.
My journey into athleticism began in high school with JROTC, where I discovered the value of leadership, discipline, and teamwork. The military followed, with tours in Iraq and Korea. Those years taught me about the horrors of war, but also about the incredible resilience of the human spirit.
Leaving the military, I sought new challenges, new ways to channel that energy. And running? It’s been my salvation. It makes me feel invincible, confident, ready to take on whatever the world throws my way.
Now, I’m gearing up for a marathon in Dublin this October. Excitement and nerves mingle, but my training keeps me grounded. I’m focused, determined, and ready to face the starting line. How will I fare? Honestly, it doesn’t matter. I’m there to enjoy the journey, to soak in every moment. Crossing the finish line will just be the cherry on top. And it’s not just me—millions around the globe have discovered the transformative power of running. If you’re on the fence, consider this your nudge. Running can revolutionize your health, your mood, and your life.
Here’s why:
- Shed pounds or maintain a healthy weight.
- Reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some cancers.
- Boost your mood and combat stress.
- Energize your day.
- Enhance sleep quality.
- Strengthen bones.
- Improve balance and coordination.
- Elevate your mental health.
Starting slow and listening to your body are key. But once you begin, there’s no telling where your feet will take you.
